Seasonal Greetings from the European Society for Photobiology

Dear members and friends of the ESP,

As we approach the end of the year, we are reminded of the challenges our world continues to face, from ongoing conflicts to the urgent realities of climate change. In such times, the role of science, and particularly photobiology, becomes even more vital. Our community is not only united by the pursuit of knowledge but also by the values of collaboration, friendship, and shared responsibility. International collaboration is the cornerstone of our society. It brings synergy to our research, but it also fosters bonds of trust and happiness across borders. Let us continue to strengthen these ties, ensuring that ESP remains a place where science and friendship grow hand in hand.

I encourage all PIs to support students and young researchers to join the ESP Photobiology School that will be held June 15–20, 2026, in Brixen/Bressanone, Italy. This beautiful alpine city offers both an inspiring scientific environment and rich cultural surroundings. The ESP Photobiology School combines lectures by top international faculty, poster sessions, networking, and social gatherings. This is an investment in the next generation and the future of our society. Of notice, attending the school is one of the criteria to obtain the award “ESP Supplement to the PhD Degree”. I also invite all young photobiologists to join the 2nd ESP Junior Meeting on March 26–27, 2026, which will be held online, free of charge. This meeting provides a unique platform for early-career researchers to present their work, exchange ideas, and connect with peers across Europe in a supportive and collaborative environment.

The ESP also warmly invite you to submit your research to our official journal, Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences (PPS). By doing so, you contribute to strengthening our society’s voice and ensuring that our collective achievements are recognized globally.

Finally, mark your calendars for the 22nd Congress of the ESP, taking place in Krakow, Poland, August 22–29, 2027. The ESP2027 will offer an outstanding scientific program and the chance to experience one of Europe’s most historic and vibrant cities.

As the holiday season begins, let us take time to rest, reflect, and celebrate with our families and friends. I wish you a happy vacation and a peaceful season filled with warmth, laughter, and renewed energy for the year ahead.

With gratitude and optimism,
Pål Kristian Selbo, President of the ESP
